Honoring Arthur Kaufman, MD. Vice Chancellor for Community Health
Over the weekend we had the privilege of photographing an event at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. The Living Legends Dinner is held by the school to honor people that have gone above and beyond the call of duty. According to the UNM School of Medicine’s website:
“Paul B. Roth, MD, MS, Chancellor for Health Sciences and Dean of the UNM School of Medicine, created the Living Legend award in 2009 to recognize extraordinary contributions to the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and the community. The Living Legend award recognizes a leader’s dedication, devotion and vision in helping us all achieve and advance our three primary missions:
· Educating the next generation of health care professionals;
· Providing state-of-the-art healthcare to everyone regardless of the ability to pay; and
· Supporting cutting-edge research to find cures and treatments which will improve the quality of life for future generations.
Living Legend award recipients are honored at an invitational awards dinner hosted by Dr. Roth.”
This year the UNM School of Medicine chose to award Arthur Kaufman, MD for his contributions to medical education and his efforts to advance socially responsible policies in the medical field. According to the pamphlet they handed out at the dinner,
“ Dr. Kaufman joined the UNM School of Medicine’s faculty as an assistant professor in 1974. He and his colleagues soon began encouraging medical students to start patient care early in their training while spending time in rural and underserved areas of New Mexico to better acquaint them with the needs of a diverse patient population. This problem-based learning approach gave rise to UNM’s Primary Care Curriculum, which has been widely emulated around the world.
Today, Dr. Kaufman is nationally known for his leadership in the Beyond Flexner movement to educate physicians to attend to issues of health equity and better access to health care.”
We really enjoyed photographing the dinner it was full of great speeches, delicious food, and lots of friendship and laughter. We hope you enjoy your peek inside the UNM School of Medicine’s Living Legend Dinner.
